The 7 Chair by Arne Jacobsen is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and for that occasion the producer Fritz Hansen are launching this limited edition collection of monochrome chairs at the Milan Design Fair, with colours selected by renowned Danish artist Tal R. He chose nine new hues that all lie ”in between two colours”, constantly pulled in both directions, to give them more depth. They change with the light, space, season and other factors in the surrounding environments. I fell for the one they call orange, but I would probably say terracotta or copper?
If I were to actually pick one for my own home though, it would have to be this simple white. Somehow the monochrome version looks very fresh to me, even after seeing the 7 chair all my life and honestly being quite bored with it. The new look makes us ‘read’ the chair differently, seeing it as a single shape unlike the traditional chrome frame edition, which is read more as a shell on a base.
